Smart Material Solutions, LLC (SMS) is a small business with expertise in precision manufacturing, nanofabrication, metamaterials, and clean energy. SMS is backed by the Department of Defence (DoD), NASA, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop Nanocoining – a rapid nanopatterning process to create seamless cylindrical molds for roll-to-roll nanoimprint lithography (NIL). Smart Material Solutions has built a strong intellectual property portfolio around Nanocoining and its applications, including exclusive licenses to two patents from North Carolina State University as well as several additional patents developed and owned by SMS.

Facilities & Equipment

Smart Material Solutions is located in an 1,800-square-foot facility in Raleigh, North Carolina with both office and lab space. The lab houses equipment including a:

  • Nanocoining Pilot Line: A custom diamond-turning CNC lathe and indenting system.

  • Roll-to-Roll Nanoimprint Lithography (R2R NIL): A Carpe Diem R2R UV NIL tool.

  • Cleanroom: Controls dust and temperature for our Nanocoining pilot line and R2R tools.

  • Nanofabrication: UV NIL and thermal embossing tools, spin coater, desiccators, hot plates, sputter coater, and fume hood.

  • Machining and Fabrication: milling machine and standard tools.

  • Metrology: optical microscopes, atomic force microscope (AFM), UV-Vis, FTIR, and solar simulator.

SMS also has an agreement with the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) and the NCSU Nanofabrication Facility (NNF) for the use of nanofabrication and nanocharacterization equipment including microscopes (FIB/SEM, AFM, confocal microscope), a nanoimprinter, reactive ion etchers (RIE), sputter coaters, evaporators, and photolithography equipment.

Location

Smart Material Solutions is located in North Carolina’s rapidly growing Research Triangle. Our headquarters is less than 15 minutes from downtown Raleigh, RDU airport, NC State University, and Research Triangle Park, and 20 minutes from Duke, UNC, and downtown Durham. SMS is able to leverage talented individuals and state-of-the-art facilities to continue its development.
